On Friday night, improv troupe The Focus Group is at the Bangor Arts Exchange, it’s hip hop night at Queen City Cinema Club featuring Assasi and Boss, Whippoorwill Wood is at Paddy Murphy’s, Mai Kheet and Glen Dubose perform at Black Bear Brewing on Exchange St., and it’s vinyl night at Nocturnem Drafthaus. Up in Orono — where it’s graduation weekend! — on Friday night Zesty is at the Common Loon, and there’s a hardcore show at the Black Box Theatre on the UMaine campus, featuring War Criminal, Flooding Panama, Smooth Moves and Slave Formation. On Saturday, The Maine Dead Project plays the music of the Grateful Dead at the Bangor Arts Exchange, the Nikki Hunt Band plays at the Sea Dog, Dave Mello plays the blues at Nocturnem, and there’s the monthly Bangor contradance at the UU Church on Park Street.
In Portland, on Friday night country singer Kip Moore plays at the State Theatre, Delta Rae plays at Port City Music Hall, Erin Harpe and the Delta Swingers are at One Longfellow Square, there’s indie music from The Cradle, Joey Agresta and Holy People at the Apohadion, it’s burlesque night at Bayside Bowl, it’s Dungeon Metal DJ Night at Geno’s, and there’s stand-up comedy all weekend long at Empire. On Saturday, the Fogcutters, Portland’s local big band, celebrates its 10th anniversary at Aura. Elsewhere, Ghost Light is at Portland House of Music and Events, the Mammals are at One Longfellow, Leslie Ross and N.B. Aldrich play experimental music at the Space Gallery, and there’s local metal with Ruin, Epicenter, They Look Human and Pariah at Geno’s.
It’s graduation weekend for most colleges and universities in Maine, and it’s also Mother’s Day weekend — so it’s pretty likely that a lot of moms are going to be proud, happy ladies this weekend. Brunch is the meal that has been deemed the appropriate way to celebrate Mother’s Day, and naturally, there are tons of brunches all over the state this weekend, from church breakfasts on Saturday morning, to Sunday meals at old standbys like the Lucerne Inn in Dedham, Penobscot Valley Country Club in Orono or Seasons in Bangor. On TV this weekend, Netflix premieres teen drama “The Society,” Amy Poehler’s new comedy flick “Wine Country,” and season three of “Easy,” while over on Showtime, the music docuseries “Wu-Tang Clan: Of Mice and Men” premieres, and on HBO, on Saturday, popular podcast “My Dad Wrote a Porno” premieres as a limited comedy series. In movie theaters this weekend, the incredibly fun-looking “Pokemon Detective Pikachu” hits screens.
