5 Things To Do This Weekend, Nov. 28-30: This bird is cooked

Wilford_Brimley1. So much turkey. So much gravy. So much TV. So much watching various family members dig into the Scotch. After all that’s over and done with, many of us are lucky enough to have a nice long weekend to enjoy. In Bangor this weekend, on Friday you can enjoy stuff including the annual Movember Mustache Bash at Paddy Murphy’s with musical guests the Brad Hutchinson Project; show off your ‘stache (such as the glorious one at left) or marvel at everyone else’s. At Nocturnem Drafthaus there’s Maine Americana favorites the Ghost of Paul Revere, who play from 8 to 11 p.m., at the Sea Dog there’s Magnetic North, and at the Big Easy there’s a dance party with DJ TkLo, and the monthly country throwdown night at Tantrum. On Saturday, Bangor’s own When Particles Collide bring the rock at Nocturnem, the Tyler Healey Band is at the Downunder Club at Seasons, rockers Magnetic North play their second gig of the weekend at Paddy Murphy’s, blues dudes Sus4 are set for the Big Easy, and indie pop band the Rotating Taps will play at Ipanema. And if bars aren’t your thing, go check out a free screening of 80s classic “Labyrinth” at 9 p.m. at KahBang’s Central Gallery.

butcherboy2. At the State Theatre on Friday, an ensemble of Trans Siberian Orchestra members dubbed The Wizards of Winter performs some holiday music, while at Empire, there’s a DJ dance party (there’s another one on Saturday, too). Also on Friday, the Asylum hosts a Portland-centric tribute to the Ramones, featuring performances by The Leftovers, The Connection, The Wildhearts, Planeside and Paranoid Social Club. At One Longfellow square, Vinyl Instinct (the artists formerly known as late 80s Portland band El Cid) release an album, and at Port City Music Hall, there’s Phish cover band Pardon Me, Doug. Saturday and Sunday nights both, there are two performances of Spencer Albee’s 12th annual Beatles Night — a fabulous Portland-centric celebration of the fab four — at the State Theatre. Also on Saturday, the Space Gallery hosts a big bill of New England artsy weirdos, including Butcher Boy (pictured above), Lunch Cult, the Flies? and Morgan Lindenschmidt; One Longfellow Square hosts a who’s who of Maine bluegrass performers dubbed Mr. Sun; and at Geno’s, there’s the Gamma Goochies, Nuclear Bootz and Hogan’s Alley.

t600-Alice3. We like the Midcoast for fun post-turkey activities this weekend. There’s quite an assortment of options: at Waterfall Arts in Belfast on Friday, there’s a night of punk rock and indie rock featuring When Particles Collide, Earth Person and Jim Dandy. At the Speakeasy in Rockland, ska band El Grande takes the stage, while folk ensemble Slippery Slope is at Rock City Coffee, Americana band Crooked Still is at the Strand Theatre, and there’s another Movember mustache bash at Rock Harbor Brewpub with Rick Turcotte and the Rick O’Shays. On Saturday, rockers Tilden Katz will play at Myrtle Street Tavern in Rockland, the Blamehounds are set for the Speakeasy, and Midcoast born and raised songwriter Alice Limoges (pictured) plays a set at Rock City Coffee.

shopping bangor4. So Friday is Black Friday, as they say. That means a lot of you will be getting up ridiculously early and possibly getting into fistfights or worse while battling to be the one that buys the super cheap TV or appliance or toy or whatever it is that’s hot this year. There are a couple of places that offer more beyond just waiting in line to spend money. For instance, at the Marketplace in Augusta, there’s a food truck roundup, a light show and a DJ from midnight until 2 a.m. In Freeport, from midnight until 7 a.m. there’s Santa on a motorcycle and a fun run to burn off those Thanksgiving calories. And of course, on Saturday it’s Small Business Saturday — a great way to support local businesses and put money back into your own community. Shopping local is one of the best way you can make an actual impact on the economic vitality of the place you live!

5. Or, you know, you could just stay home and relax and enjoy the fact that you have family or friends or a roof over your head or a job or something that makes you happy or any of the things we take for granted on a daily basis. That’s good too. Whatever floats your boat. ‘Tis the season to be thankful for what you’ve got.
