Rise Above Fest brings Avenged Sevenfold, Seether, Motorhead, others to Bangor Waterfront

avenged_sevenfoldWaterfront Concerts announced a multi-artist bill for the Darling’s Waterfront Pavilion set for Saturday, May 10, when the Rise Above Festival will come to Bangor, featuring headliners Avenged Sevenfold, Seether, Motorhead, Hellyeah, Black Stone Cherry and many others. It is the second edition of the one-day-only festival; it was first held in 2012 in Gilford, NH.

“We’ve been in talks for the past two or three about bringing this festival to Bangor,” said Waterfront Concerts head Alex Gray. “This was the year to do it.”

The Rise Above Festival is an annual event created by Seether frontman Shaun Morgan, that aims to raise awareness about suicide prevention and mental illness and raise money for SAVE (Suicide Awareness Voice of Education). Tickets will go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, at waterfrontconcerts.com, Ticketmaster.com, by calling 1-800-745-3000 or visit Mark’s Music in Brewer. Ticket prices are not yet announced, but will offer both general admission and VIP packages.

seetherThe festival’s name is taken from the Seether (pictured at left) song “Rise Above This,” which Morgan wrote as a message to his brother. His brother took his own life six years ago before he ever got a chance to hear the song, and it was that experience that inspired Morgan to start the festival. The inaugural event was held over Labor Day weekend 2012 in Gilford, NH and raised nearly $20,000 for the New Hampshire chapter of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) through ticket sales, a special Rise Above Fest auction, and a limited edition T-shirt, which sold out in less than two hours.

This year’s festival will raise money for SAVE, an organization that seeks to eliminate the causes of suicide, the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. According to the World Health Organization, every 39 seconds someone in the world dies of suicide.

“The fact that so many people supported our first event, along with all of those who have shared how we helped get them through their own tough times, makes us want to continue reaching out and educating people,” said Morgan, in a press release. “No one is alone and no one should ever feel that way. Plus, with bands like Avenged Sevenfold, Motorhead and Hellyeah willing to support, it will definitely be a show to remember.”

Other bands confirmed to participate include Hellyeah, Trivium, Kyng, Devour the Day, Black Stone Cherry, Muckler’s Circle and Skindred. This will be an all-day, multi-stage festival that will feature local artists throughout the day as well; information on local bands will be announced later in 2014.

The Rise Above Fest joins previously announced concerts in the Machias Savings Bank Concert Series, including Celtic Woman, Dave Matthews Band, Brad Paisley, Arcade Fire, Lady Antebellum and Jason Aldean. For more information, visit waterfrontconcerts.com.
