Mysterious Valentines blanket downtown Bangor

Downtown Bangorians awoke to a mysterious — but very pleasant — surprise Tuesday morning, as hundreds of red-and-white paper hearts appeared on Central, Main, Hammond, Broad and State Streets. This Valentine’s Day treat isn’t a new thing, as Portland has had a “Valentine Phantom” for more than 30 years, but it is the first such occurrence in Bangor. Here’s a snapshot of where some of the hearts appeared this morning. Few of these simple Valentines have been removed yet, so there’s still time today to get downtown and take a gander. Happy Valentine’s Day to all our readers, whether you’ve got a sweetie or not!

UPDATE: The Bangor Valentine Phantom has a Facebook page. The mystery deepens!
